What The Hell Is Open Throat Singing Anyway?

If you've been researching singing techniques online and watched a few YouTube singing tutorials to boot, no doubt you've come across the term Open Throat Singing or Open Throat Technique somewhere along the way. I'm about to take the mystery away from this confusing term and show you exactly how to do it without all the jargon and marketing fluff.

So what exactly IS Open Throat singing anyway?

Well, if high notes feel something like this:

You need open throat singing.

Now, if you're just looking for the super-practical, how-to-apply-it-now, jargon-free approach to Open Throat singing, you can scroll down a little past this next technical section where I'm going to show you exactly how to do it yourself in a simple but practical tutorial video.

Alright, now for the technical stuff.

The term Open Throat is a literal interpretation of the classical Italian singing phrase La Gola Aperta, which translates literally into "The Open Throat", but as you no doubt already (or will soon) know most singing terms and instructions are a figure of speech intended to explain some of the more intangible and difficult to explain elements of singing to a budding singer. Literal interpretation of terms like Open Throat or Appoggio are the reason why learning to sing is often so difficult and confusing for many singers, when it really should be a simple and easy pursuit that is ever joyful. Instead, you're being sold trick terms and sleight of hand in the form of classical terminology that was never really intended to be used in it's current form - to sell online singing courses.

I often come across budding singers who are physically trying to "open" their throats when in fact singing should often be closed in it's nature - from closure of your vocal folds, to closing the soft palate and singing with vowels that are often narrowed towards closure. There are very few aspects that are truly open in a literal sense.

The key purpose of Open Throat Technique is to sing without strain or tension by shaping your vowels correctly, modifying your resonant space, placing your formant and keeping consistent and controlled airflow.

Learning how to sing is actually pretty simple when someone actually explains all those terms and concepts in a practical way, right?

There are four main aspects to singing with an Open Throat which I like to call "The Four Vocal Fundamentals" - basically, every single concept, technique, trick and term out there relates directly to one of these four vocal fundamentals;

  • Height In The Vocal Tract
  • Forward Placement
  • "All In One Flow"
  • Mixed Tonality

Now, I'm going to share a SUPER important video with you at the bottom of this lesson which is going to show you the #1 most important thing you're EVER going to learn as a singer, but first, let's dive right into Open Throat Technique.

I can just about hear all of that mystery and confusion melting away as we work through each concept. So now you know that Open Throat is really just a broad term to describe the tenets of strain-free singing;

Vowel shaping (front/middle/back tongue position)
Vowel modification (altering resonant space to "ping" your resonance)
Bright vocal formant (forward placement)
Diaphragmatic support (compression within consistent airflow)
