What are Rock Singing Lessons?

You might have looked into local singing lessons recently and been a little disappointed to find that only “classical” or “pop” singing lessons are available.

Look no further for Rock Singing Lessons!

My favourite singers are Chris Cornell, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Rodgers, Steven Tyler and Ann Wilson – you guess it, I absolutely LOVE it when my students are looking for Rock Singing Lessons. I’ve been teaching singing worldwide now for 10 years, 7 of which have been here at Bohemian Vocal Studio. I’ve had students go on to make albums, participate in singing contests like The Voice and X-Factor, join established bands and tour the world – your singing life is what you make of it! Book in with me now to your right (on the sidebar) and we can discuss your goals and start making a plan for your technique, building your range and also where you’d like to take your voice.

What makes singing technique “Rock” rather than “Classical”?

That’s a kettle of fish! The technique behind powerful Rock Singing is actually very similar to Classical singing technique – in fact, I studied Classical singing technique for many years myself before venturing out as a Rock Singing Coach, so even that powerful, gritty, ‘whiskey’ sound we all love about rock singers CAN be achieved in a healthy way, using the right technique.

That’s me! I don’t LOOK like an Opera singer, right?

If you listen to a really powerful rock singer, it’s likely you can actually hear some of the classical techniques that they’re using to sing into their high range and sustain their power – listen to your favourite singers, can you hear how they sing their vowels? Can you hear how they’re controlling the onset of their voice? Can you pick the consonants, the tone of their voice and how consisten their voice is from note to note? Healthy singing technique takes many forms and has many different tones – we don’t all need to have that ‘classical’ sound when we’re using healthy singing technique. You’ve seen my videos on YouTube, right? I sing using classical technique, but I’m TOTALLY a “Rock Guy” in every way, the sound of my voice, my delivery, the long hair (ha), the singers that I rave about – all very Rock ‘n Roll without any hint of Opera or a classical tone!

What techniques do I need for singing Rock?

Breathing is your foundation, Vowels are you walls, Diction is your rafters, and Deliver is your roof. Learning how to breathe using your diaphragm is #1 Key to Rock Singing and healthy singing in general. When you book Rock Singing Lessons with me here at Bohemian Vocal Studio, we’ll also be developing the concept of Vowel Modification and Vowel Placement, which will allow you to ascend well past your current vocal breaks and STAY there up in the upper range without strain – pretty cool yeah? Then we’ll be working on Diction and Deliver using a number of other approaches and techniques focusing on open consonant production, different resonant sounds, distortion and grit and of course, that ever-important ROCK delivery. Here’s a few things we’ll be looking at when you book a session with me:

  • Diaphragmatic Breathing
  • Modified Vowels
  • Placement
  • Diction
  • Open consonant sounds
  • Resonance and Tone
  • Belting
  • Transitioning your registers
  • Chest, Middle and Head voice
  • Tons more!

Are Rock Singing Lessons safe?

Absolutely – if you’re learning Rock Singing Tehcnique with Bohemian Vocal Studio, you can be confident that you’re learning from THE BEST. I sing for at least three to six hours a day, at least 6 days a week, and in most styles, from the hardest of rock to even the lightest of pop and folk, whatever my students are bringing in to the lesson to work on. My voice is more powerful now in my mid 30’s than it was when I was 18 years old and the voice is known to be more resiliant. My range has increased around 300%, from less than an Octave to a solid four on a really good day – 3.5 on an average day. The secret is, the techniques we use to sing Rock and Metal with are actually the same healthy foundation used in Opera and Classical, so your voice is SAFE 100% of the time, we just modify your delivery and approach so that it sounds more aggressive and powerful, without actually pushing your chords in any way. It’s such a liberating feeling to be able to belt the highest of notes, and hit any pitch you need with consistency, confidence and a powerful delivery!

Me again, Live on stage

Another part of my niche as a Rock Singing Coach is that I not only work with complete beginners, the youth and seasoned stage and studio singers like myself, but I also have a specialty working with older (relatively!) rock singers who have been singing the same way since the 70’s or 80’s without proper singing technique – after 30 years in the game, their range has now dropped, their voice is getting weaker because of their lack of technique, or their voices are starting to crack and sound strained – but with healthy singing technique you can clear up your tone, regain those lost high-notes of your youth PLUS a higher range and build a much more powerful delivery, no matter your age or experience.

The most dangerous thing to your voice is incorrect vocal technique – so make sure you’re taking singing lessons with a professional vocal coach like you will here at Bohemian Vocal Studio, your voice will thank you!

Conclusion

Rock Singing Technique = Healthy singing technique… depending on how you learn it! If you want to build a healthy foundation and powerful singing technique that can be used for Rock, Pop, Blues any any number of contemporary styles, book a session with me today in the sidebar to your right.

  1. Hi, my name is Thomas, I live in Germany (Berlin) and I’m really interested in your singing lessons.
Should I just book a Skype-Lesson (sorry – but I only used Sky one time – years ago) to get in contact with you?
How much is it and how could we handle the time difference between Europe an Australia?
Singing wise, I’m really interested in different styles (Rock/Blues/Soul) from Chris Cornell via Wilson Pickett to Tom Jones and all the old raspy Bluessingers. I don’t know, if I ever can handle these things, but I want to try with you. In the end, I like to find my own voice – if it is possible.
So, sorry for my english (especially my gramma) – I understand a little bet better than I talk or write.
    Cheers
    Thomas
Sorry, I use this way, because I can’t send you an email via contact – always capture failed
