Rock Singing Course

Rock Singing Course

I grew up listening to Aerosmith, Skid Row, Soundgarden, Metallica and AC/DC – and when I first started learning to sing, there were only classical teachers available locally who really didn’t rate many of my favourite singers like Layne Staley, Chris Cornell or Steven Tyler. Hours and hours of classical scales later, my voice had improved on each exercise, but my actual singing really hadn’t budged when it came to my favourite rock songs.

What I discovered was a lack of association between what and how I was practising from what I actually wanted to sing – after all, singing your favourite songs is really the reason we all want to sing well.  Who cares if you can sing a major scale if you can’t sing Sweet Emotion or Master of Puppets, right? After many years of struggling and inability to sing high notes, I started looking for a new and better way to sing rock – and what I found might shock you.

Foundation is key

[one_half padding=”0 15px 0 0″][/one_half]The longer I spent learning how to sing, the more ‘advanced’ techniques I kept searching for – vowel modification, compression, cry mode, support, distortion, forward placement. But, NONE of these advanced techniques really did anything for my voice other than create strain and tension – what was I missing?

Foundation is key. I was lucky to find a voice coach who immediately (and without diplomacy!) pointed out the very basic issues that were holding my voice back, even after nearly a decade of learning how to sing. Foundation in singing really is just like the concrete foundations of a skyscraper that is being built, the walls and roof and structure that is held up by the base – just like your range and tone are held up by your support in singing. By first addressing each issue discovered in my foundation, these advanced techniques like vowel modification really started to gel in a natural way to the powerful foundation and resonance that I discovered – in fact, the more simply I approach singing, the less important these tricks and ‘secrets’ really became in my practical ability to sing well.
