How to improve head voice
You can’t push your chest voice high enough to hit that powerful note you’re aiming for, but head voice just sounds weak and light – what’s the deal?
Learning to improve head voice is a key part of having a confident, consistent and powerful singing voice. It’s not really a matter of chest voice vs head voice or head voice vs falsetto, the reality is you need to bridge your chest voice head voice with MIDDLE voice or MIX voice.
The reality is, your vocal chord coordination can, and should be fluid, always moving and zipping up in either direction rather than ‘locking’ into one spot and requiring excess pressure to hit your pitch. You can improve head voice instantly by putting these concepts aside for a moment, and focusing on simply placing your voice correctly with resonance first – an ‘N’ or ‘NG’ sound without any force behind it should do the trick. If you’re having trouble connecting your voice with an “N” sound for placement, I recommend registering for the complimentary short course on resonance available here at BVS which will help you build a healthy resonant sound.
Now, all you need to do is replace that “N” with a correct soft palate position (so, closed but raised), and the right tongue shape for your vowels, just like the video below:
You should now have the sensation of a powerfully placed resonant sound, but have the sound of a full, strain-free vowel ‘buzzing’ instead of being forced out of your mouth.
Secondly, we need to work on your chord coordination so that we’re not ‘locking’ our chords as we ascend. Here’s another super effective tutorial on bridging your head and middle voice so that your high range can build higher and higher in a full sound:
Are you releasing your registers as you ascend? Are you singing with a RESONANT sound rather than breathy singing? Can you PLACE your voice properly before you sing by using “N” or “NG”? Can you now use the right tongue shapes and control the soft palate properly?
