Hate Your Vocal Tone? This Is
HOW TO SING WITH GREAT TONE
It’s a common question I get from people contacting me about improving their singing for the first time.
Usually it’s “Hey Kegan, thanks for your videos, my tone sucks – can you help?”
And when I try to get them to elaborate on exactly the issue (ie: are they nasal, are they inconsistent, are they dark, is it certain vowel sounds in particular etc) I usually receive a blank look; “my tone just sucks”
And herein lies the problem – if you don’t know “what” something is, how can you fix it?
So lets break done what TONE really means when it comes to singing.
At it’s most basic, we’re talking about a pleasant sound that doesn’t tear paint from the walls, or doesn’t sound like a vacuum cleaner in reverse just pushing air like a blizzard.
But as we delve a touch deeper into the core of your tone, you’ll start to realise that vocal tone is all about frequencies and resonance.
Oh that magical thing – resonance.
The first thing I notice about singers who hate their tone is that they’re often lacking resonance.
They push out the words.
They don’t sustain vowels.
They’re all about the consonants.
They have issues forming vowels properly.
And these are very specific issues with very specific solutions – not just “bad tone”.
In fact, every single singer in the world has a BEAUTIFUL voice – it’s simply the nature of the instrument; the voice is beautiful in the same way a saxophone is brassy and a drum is rhythmic.
You’re just not singing in a beautiful way.
Do you know what Bel Canto really means when you translate it into English?
You guessed it – Beautiful Singing.
If you hate your vocal tone, then you simply aren’t singing in a beautiful manner by way of excellent technique.
Sure, you might be practicing lip trills.
Using the diaphragm.
Yawning before you sing.
But that doesn’t mean that you’re applying these techniques and concepts when you sing actual singers – practical application really IS the be-all-and-end-all of singing actual songs in a beautiful way;
Having an approach for every sound that you’re going to sing.
Singing in a consistent, sustainable way.
Singing with balanced resonance and frequencies.
Not forcing or pushing.
Singing with sustained resonance.
