1 x Extra Octave of Vocal Range

I’m about the share the secret to finding an extra octave of vocal range.

You barely even have to train it, it’s there waiting for you in the shadows.

Hiding in the dark.

Sitting right between your chest voice and your head voice.

I’m talking about mixed voice – but not the way you’ve probably heard before.

When I get questions about extending vocal range, and how to hit high notes, and how to be a better singer – one of the first things I do is show people how to sing in mixed voice.

Because that’s where all the extra range you’ve been missing sits.

We’re not extending chest voice.

Or pulling head voice down.

We’re really taking the “see saw” point where you’re flipping between chest and head voice/where you have a super light connection and making it a bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge of Vocal Range.

The London Bridge to High Notes.

The Brooklyn Bridge of POWER.

And it’s kinda funny, because I actually remember driving across the Golden Gate bridge in San Francisco myself a couple of years ago and thinking – “goddamn, this bridge is LONG”.

This was no “point A to point B” kind of bridge – it was a destination all of it’s own.

And that’s what mixed voice really is.

It’s not a pivot point.

It’s not a spot of glue.

It’s not a bandaid.

It’s a register all of it’s own – and you’re currently not using it.

There’s a whole OCTAVE of mixed voice sitting right between your current chest and head registers, and all you have to do is access it, use it properly – and an octave of range will appear between your chest and head voice.

And how do I know this exactly?

Well for starters, it’s an anatomical thing in every single voice – the TA muscle controls pitch and tonality in your lower register, and the CT muscle controls pitch and tonality in your higher register. Ergo, use them together and you get an antagonistic relationship that literally creates a bridge between the dominant use of each of these muscles.

^ Literal. Scientific. Anatomic. Proven. Factual.

And secondly – this is what happened in my voice.

I struggled for years and years taking chest voice as high as I could yell, and I even tried bringing head voice down as far as possible.

I either dragged chest too high and flipped into head, or, I wimped out early and transitioned into falsetto instead.

Until I was shown the right way to activate mixed voice – and all of the sudden that little stepping stone I’d been struggling with became just like The Golden Gate Bridge; a massive force unto itself, a register, and ultimately an extra octave of range.

(Ed: Seriously I’ve seen whole towns here in Australia that are smaller than the span of the Golden Gate Bridge. Mind blowing stuff when you’re actually there in person)

Why all this talk about bridges you might ask?

Well that’s really what we’re doing, isn’t it? Creating a “Bridge” between your highest and lowest notes and building it higher and higher, longer and longer, stronger and stronger until it can “support” your voice with ease, power and consistency through all seasons.
